Big Brother class

This morning, Owen and I went to Carle for a big brother class.  Another family from church was there too so it was fun to sit with them.  Even though Owen’s been through this before, this time he really “gets” it.  He talks a lot about his brother, how he’s going to help, and things he’s going to teach him.  So I thought this little class might be something fun for just him and I to do together.

When we got there, he got a snack and then went through his folder and checked everything out.  We watched a silly video about being a sibling which Owen thought was fun.Picture 1620 He picked out a baby and tried to help me put on the diaper and then swaddle him.Picture 1621 Picture 1622
Then we got paper and crayons and made a picture for baby brother.  We turned it in and they’ll laminate it for us and mail it to our house to bring to the hospital.Picture 1624 He got a cool goody bag with sunglasses, crayons, big brother stickers, and a slinky.Picture 1625 Then they had a little graduation and he got a certificate saying he’s ready to be a big brother.  Overall, a cute little class that I think he enjoyed.  Also, an interesting side note.  William has been vying for the name ‘Grayson’ since I was pregnant with Owen.  I love the name, it’s just becoming super popular around here which William didn’t believe.  In the class there was one Gracyn and one of the babies-to-be was going to be named that.  After reiterating this to William, he agreed to use it as a middle name instead of his first name.  Picture 1627 He got to choose where we ate lunch and he wanted chips and salsa, so Mexican food it was!  What a fun date with my little big man.Picture 1629

Happy 1/2 Birthday Owen!

pool-1795-2As of tomorrow, this sweet little guy is exactly 2 1/2.  When he gets to be in school someday, I anticipate this is when we’ll celebrate his birthday at school with treats and such, as his real birthday will be after they get out of school.  So here’s a little info about our little man and what he’s currently up to.  And you get a little sneak peak at the pictures my sister did for us on Thanksgiving.   They will all be up soon!   pool-1762Food wise, he is still a devoted dairy lover.  Cheese, yogurt, milk, ice cream.  Loves it all.  Favorite fruits are still raspberries followed closely by pomegranates now that they’re back in season and coming down in price!  Loves pastrami and hot dogs, but doesn’t really care for chicken or chicken nuggets at all.  Loves carrots and sometimes peas, but veggies are definitely things I have to hide in other foods to be sure he gets some.pool-1859 pool-1861 pool-1863 pool-1868He’s a momma’s boy.  And I love it.  Don’t get me wrong, he loves time with dad.  But at the end of the day, I’m still his favorite. :)   pool-1869He’s a cuddler and touch is definitely one of his love languages.  He still plays with my hair when he gets sleepy. pool-1894Overall, he’s doing pretty good with sleep.  He still sometimes gets up once or twice, but he knows we will just come in quickly and check on him.  pool-1897 He still sleeps with his paci, Leo the Lion, and 2 other bears. This boy rocked potty training.  He never, not once, had a accident in public which this mama is so happy about.  He still wears diapers for nap and bedtime, but other than that is doing awesome going to the bathroom all day, everyday.  We just need to phase out the skittles. Haha.pool-1898 He spends his time playing cars and trucks.  Occasionally trains make an appearance, but match box type cars are definitely the preference around here.  He also still adores to read, play and listen to music, do puzzles, draw and color, and run around like a crazy boy.  He still asks to play on his “new” swing set almost everyday. pool-1900 His vocabulary continues to impress me as sentences are becoming longer and he comes up with words I had no idea he knew.  He sings the whole alphabet song, can count to 14 and can recognize a few letters.  Instead of saying their names, he says the words associated with them. For example, I show him E and he says Ellie.  Or a G and he’ll say Grandma.  I guess technically this is harder skill and someday he’ll know the letter names.pool-1901In general, he’s pretty introverted although I’m wondering if we’re going to have a tougher time with age 3.  He’s been showing a few more colors of a rambunctious side lately. pool-1902He loves his sister and attacks her regularly with kisses and hugs.  He praises her when she claps her hands or crawls.  The only thing is that he’s been getting much rougher with her as she gets bigger.  He likes to jump “over” her and lay on her.  She just giggles so I think it encourages him.  He’s had several time outs for this lately.pool-1923 His favorite TV shows include Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, SuperWhy, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and Arthur.  Current favorite movies we get from the library are Singing Time and the So Smart Series.pool-1997He likes to be Mr. Independent these days.  He goes up and down the stairs without holding onto anything.  He likes to zip up his own pajamas and tries to pull up his pants and put in his socks.  He enjoys taking his own bib off and get down from his chair.  He basically thinks he’s big stuffpool-1735 pool-1740This little man knows and loves his Grandma, Grandpa, MeMaw, and PaPaw.  I love how he know who they are when we talk about them and gets super excited about talking to them on the phone or going to visit.   At my parents, he makes himself at home the minute we get there by running down to the basement to start lining up the cars.

And that’s a wrap.  He is seriously one of the best things in my life.  I’m so thankful I get to be this little man’s momma.  I can’t wait to see who he grows up to be!

painting a stripe

Awhile back, we painted Owen’s room a basic neutral color.  But I decided I wanted to add a little zing to his room just using one stripe.  I looked at tons of tutorials on painting stripes and kinda meshed them all together.  First paint your base color and let it dry for a day or two.IMG_0971Then, tape off the stripe or stripes you want on your wall.  We used a laser level to help get the lines straight.IMG_0974 Then, here’s the trick.  Go OVER the tape lines with your base color, in our case the tan color.  Let this dry thoroughly.  Why do this, you ask?  Because this creates a seal with the tape.  If any paint got under the tape, it’s the same as the wall color so it doesn’t matter.IMG_0993Then, paint your stripe!  It took us 2 good coats of orange to get the coverage we needed.IMG_0981While the second coat is still DAMP, peel off the tape.  This will prevent the tape from peeling up any paint.IMG_0997 Enjoy your nice crisp line (or lines).  Ignore the slight discoloration of the orange in this picture as the paint was still drying.IMG_0998

Our Weekend Without Owen

So I’ve been a slacker blogger this past week because we were getting ready for a big weekend!  This past Thursday afternoon, I drove Owen to meet my parents in Bloomington.  And then I drove home. . .without him!  They kept him from Thursday until today for a Big Brother weekend.  We timed it to fall on our anniversary so we could have a little fun (you have dirty minds if that’s where you went first) without our little man.

Our anniversary present to ourselves was getting a little painting done.  Now in the past, we have always done our own painting.  But I’m scared to say that we may never go back.  Haha.  One of my roommates in college’s husband (Mark) does painting on the side and let me tell you, call him if you need something done.  AMAZING work.  Perfect cutting in.  Quick and very competitive price.  Seriously good stuff.

Anywhooo, he came Friday morning so Ellie and spent all morning running errands.  Holy cow that’s easy to do with just one kid.  Isn’t that amazing how time and perspective will change ya.  We got back and here’s a little preview of what was done:Picture 232I spent the entire afternoon hanging out with Ellie and crafting.  It was some glorious time I tell you.  Friday night, William went to help some friends move, so I just went right on crafting.  Got all kinds of fun stuff done.

Saturday morning, we got on the road early to head to IKEA.  My parents needed a few things for church and their house, so we decided just to get out of  Mark’s way and have a fun little road trip.   We spent a little over 4 hours there, just dreaming of what we'd buy with unlimited budgets, eating lunch, and picking out a few fun things for Owen.   Ellie did awesome and enjoyed her first trip to IKEA.  Picture 237Today, we drove over for church and to pick up our little man.  We missed him terribly, but as you’ll see by these pictures  my parents sent, he didn’t miss us a bit!  Thanks so much Mom and Dad for a fabulous, toddler free weekend.

Meeting his little sister

Gotta start getting caught up on this week!  :)  Back to day #1.  My parents both had to go back to Peoria for work, so William had to stay at home with Owen for the night.  It was definitely a little sad being without him on our first night in the hospital, but Ellie and I just hung out and pretty much nursed all night.

In the morning after rounds of all our vitals, they asked if they could get her hearing test done.  I said I'd love to shower, so they took and cuddled her while I took a glorious shower.  I told William "remember when you were putting on my underwear for 2 weeks with Owen?"  And here I was taking a shower no problem by myself.  Amazing I tell ya.  I ordered breakfast and hung out with my girl until it was time for William, O, and Jenna to finally arrive.

It was definitely hard leaving Owen for all this hoopla!  But he loved hanging out with Alex and "baby" Ben and of course Grandma and Grandpa.  I didn't know, but that morning, Jenna gave Owen a big boy hair cut. He had been looking pretty homeless lately and it was long overdue.  But I felt like I left my baby and he walked into the room as a teenager.  I won't post all the pictures as they're on facebook already, but it was such a sweet moment seeing my sweet boy.
He noticed her right away.

I wanted to get him a little gift from Ellie.  Every time we were at friend's houses that had a stroller. . .it's all he played with.  He was pretty thrilled when I pulled out the stroller.  The doll and the little dog both make noise when you push their stomachs and he thought that was pretty cool.  He spent most of the visit just pushing the stroller around the room and the hallway.
He definitely wasn't interested in holding her, but he loved looking at her toes and other body parts.  He would point to her nose and then his nose.
He sat on the bed with me and cuddled a bit and loved playing with his cars on the floor that made them go super fast.
I love our first family picture!!
They hung out for a few hours and then took off to get Owen home for lunch and naptime.  I started packing up our things, because we were close to being out of there.  More on that in the next post.

We're a family of 4!
