DIY Circus Marquee Sign

I cannot wait to give you a full rundown of the amazing party we threw to celebrate my 5,3,1 kiddos. But before the full show of pictures, I have to share a few of my favorite projects from the party. Has anyone noticed that these circus marquee letters are everywhere in decor these days? I’ve seen them in so many stores, from Hobby Lobby to Target.
I knew I HAD to have these but when I started hunting around, the lowest price I was seeing was still upwards of $15 for EACH letter. Yeah, not going to happen. So I did what any good crafter would do and started scouring Pinterest for good ways to make them on the cheap. I found a few blogs out there (here and here) but the costs were still a bit high using the paper mache letters or wood. Then I started finding a few that used cardboard. (here) Bingo. My kind of price.
So here’s what you need:
  1. 2-3 sheets of posterboard in the color you want
  2. 2 sheets of foam board (walmart even carries it).  Great if it’s in the color you need, but just paint it if it’s not.
  3. acrylic paint (see above)
  4. hot glue gun
  5. something sharp like a pencil to create the holes
  6. 1 string of Christmas lights (I used a 150 light strand I think)
Step 1
Some people can freehand letters. Not this girl. I used my Silhouette software to print out large letters over 4 sheets of paper. You can also do this in excel or photoshop. I used the free font Budmo found here and used text size 1500. Print the parts of the large letter, cut them out and tape them together.  Then trace them onto your foam board and cut those out. I needed to use an exacto knife to cut through the foam board.
11134147_802940633094040_2304935427416357110_n Step 2
If your foam board is not the color you want it to be, paint it.  Mine was yellow on one side and white on the other and I needed it to be red. So a little thing of acrylic paint and 2 coats later, and it was red. You don’t need to worry about painting the sides of the boards, just the top. A word of warning, I bought 2 kinds of foam board, one from Walmart and one from the Dollar Tree. The Dollar Tree one was much thinner and actually curled a little bit after the paint dried. I didn’t really care as I wasn’t going for perfect, but you might be happier with the thicker foam board from Wally World or your local craft store.
Step 3
Poke the holes for the lights. Now there are tons of cool strands of lights out there that look much more like marquee lights. And if I was using these letters for room decor or something for the long haul, I would have splurged. A friend even offered to loan me the lights hanging above their patio (thanks Laura). But 2 hour party folks. A free strand of Christmas lights from the basement tub worked just fine.  I started the lights at the top of one letter and poked a hole just a little shorter than the distance between the 2 bulbs on the string. You’re not leaving the lights in the holes yet, just poking the holes.

Step 4
Cut your posterboard into 2” long strips. I used almost 2 full sheets of posterboard for my 6 marquee letters.

Step 5
Heat up your trusty glue gun. Then slowly, very slowly, put a line of hot glue on the edge of the foam board in 1-2” increments.  Line up a strip of posterboard with the bottom the foam board and press to attach.  Does that make sense?  IMG_5388Continue around the edge of the letter and around the inside. It will take a bit of finagling on the small inside spaces of some of the letters, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be. I found that on the large curved letters, it helped to use 2 smaller strips instead of one long one to get a best fit and without it getting weird and bendy.IMG_5389 IMG_5390 Step 6
Now that you have all your letters done, all you have to do it insert your string of lights in the back.  They fit pretty snug in the holes, but I did add some painter’s tape along to secure it. Sorry I didn’t take any pictures of this step.  When I was done, all the letters were strung together and now had to be moved as a group. Here’s a picture with the lights in focus, not the letters.

Step 7
Then you just need to have someone else hang it for you. haha. I simply put some command strips on the back and hung them from the overhang on our patio.

I was pretty impressed that they even survived an hour of good rain. We took them down so they could live in our basement now! Definitely added just the amount of pop I wanted for the party. And not bad for under $5!

Janessa’s b-day party

This morning, one of Owen’s friends had a birthday party.  I got a babysitter for Ellie and then decided I might as well leave Miles since he takes a bottle well.  So Miles had his first non-family babysitter and did awesome!  And I got to spend some special one-on-one time with Owen.

The party was at Michael’s craft store and Jennifer had come up a with a super neat art project for them.  She spent the time taping off each kiddo’s name on a canvas.  Then each kid painted and put handprints on it.  10420078_10152189134866179_3753231502963404438_n10463006_10152189135001179_6624307289083599064_n After it dried, we peeled off their names.  So cute!10351306_10152189135281179_2877078382944981025_n10390114_10152189134721179_7907307826197936858_nThen we enjoyed pizza and cupcakes.  Such a fun morning.  And can you tell that Jen is a professional photographer?  Thanks for all the great pictures of the day!  Happy 4th birthday Janessa!

Owen’s 4th birthday!

Owen’s  birthday celebration began early on Saturday.  We’ve been talking a lot about what kind of bike he wanted.  So we headed to Toys R Us to try some out.  He immediately gravitated towards this orange bike, even though he’s been saying from the get to that he wanted a blue bike.  He hopped on it at the store and rode like a pro.  After trying a few others ones out, he still said this was the one he wanted.  So it came home with us, along with a hot wheels helmet!Picture 1812We struggled to get him back inside after riding.Picture 1814

On Tuesday (his real birthday), he woke up to this: Picture 1840Picture 1855  He of course wanted to open his presents immediately.Picture 1841 Picture 1845 We had birthday donuts for a special treat.Picture 1853Picture 1854Elmer and Jackie (William’s parents) arrived later in the day and he got to open even more presents!
Picture 1859Picture 1861 Owen wanted to help decorate his own cake.  So not Pinteresty but fun to do it together.Picture 1865Picture 1869
For the last part of his birthday celebrations, he got treated to a movie with his best buddy, Sam.  Carrie and Rob (and baby Jack) came to pick him up Saturday morning and they all went to see How to Train Your Dragon 2.  He had an absolute blast. Picture 1707 Picture 1710
Picture 1713All in all, it was a super fun week of celebrating him!  Definitely not a birthday party complete with animals, but we’ll go big again next year when I haven’t just had a baby. :)

Our day in Peoria

After we got such wonderful news about Miles, we decided to make the most of our day in Peoria with my parents.  We had never checked out the Peoria Zoo, so after letting Ellie get up from a failed nap, off we went.  I like zoos in 70 degree weather as opposed to full on summer heat so today was perfect for it!
There were these (well-loved) animal statues all over and they might have been Owen’s favorite part.IMG_9528IMG_9529IMG_9550 One of the highlights was this little bird aviary.  For $1 you could buy a stick with some bird treats on it.  The birds would land right on your stick.  I was pretty shocked that both kids LOVED it and weren’t scared at all.  I, on the other hand, didn’t mind letting William and Grandpa stay in there with all the birds.IMG_9540IMG_9544This little girl is all sass these days and loves to put her hands on her hips. :)IMG_9551 She also loves these two guys:IMG_9552 While the zoo is small (and a tad overpriced) the Africa exhibit is nice.  IMG_9558The kids lasted way longer than I thought they would and walked the whole way.       IMG_9535Grandma had baby duty:IMG_9538We headed back to their house and after a great grilled burger dinner, we celebrated Owen’s birthday a few days early.  My Grandma and Grandpa Hoerr came over to celebrate with us.  He requested vanilla cupcakes with chocolate frosting. IMG_9565IMG_9579He opened a new duplo set (a pirate ship) and was so excited.  “This is the best present ever.”IMG_9580But then he opened the next present which was a pair of pajamas (requested by me) and said “aww man.”  I’m taking it that pj’s weren’t really on his list.  haha IMG_9581 We enjoyed chatting and eating dessert while my mom gave the big kids baths before hitting the road.  My grandma got in some great Miles’ snuggles.IMG_9585I really had no idea how this day was going to turn out.  I had prepared myself for the worst and at many times throughout the day, found myself in disbelief that we were just getting to enjoy an awesome family fun day with 3 healthy kiddos in tow!

Ellison’s birthday celebrations!

How in the world is my sweet little girl 2 years old?!  Ok, I know every mom says that…but I really do feel like this day was just yesterday:Ellison Announcement-8052-001(I'll post what she's up to in another post.)  We got all her gifts set up the night before as the girl gets up about 6 every day.IMG_1804My mom and I found the dollhouse at a resale shop in town almost a year ago.  We bought it knowing she’d be ready for it eventually.  I’ve purchased a few sets of furniture on eBay but plan on adding more things as she gets bigger.  She dove right into the dollhouse as soon as everyone was up and going.    IMG_1807Of course, she had to open all her other presents before we could even think about breakfast.  She loves music, just like Owen, so we added a few pieces to their instruments.IMG_1824This present was a huge hit.  A while back, we had a play date at my friend Tiffany’s house.  Her little girl had some pretend make-up that was adorable.  I ordered this set from Amazon as the shop on Etsy where Tiffany had bought hers was no longer open.  Ellie LOVED it.  She knew exactly what to do.  She loves watching me put on make-up and knows which lip gloss she’s allowed to grab out my bag and use.  She carried her makeup bag around all day (and many days after that).IMG_1829IMG_1813We finally got to eat yummy huge blueberry muffins for breakfast and of course she got to blow out a "2” candle.IMG_1838IMG_1832For her birthday “party” this year, we planned a simple fun weekend in Peoria with my parents and grandparents.  Since her birthday was on Easter weekend, it worked out great!  They have this great place in Peoria called Monkey Joes.  It is basically a building packed full of bounce houses.  There are party rooms that you can book as well.  I wish we had one of these in Champaign for the cold winter months.  The kids had a BLAST.  Since I am huge and pregnant, I was simply on camera duty while William, Grandma, and Grandpa were on bounce duty.IMG_1883 IMG_1861 IMG_1866 Owen got pretty brave and finally did these slides by himself!IMG_1874 IMG_1877
We went back to my parents house for cake and more presents!IMG_1908 IMG_1890 She loved her princess dress and “high heels!”IMG_1902 Happy birthday sweet girl!  We hope you feel how loved and celebrated you are!
