Easter Egg Hunt

Today we were SO excited to see the sun!  Yes, it was still chilly but considering we are supposed to get 6 inches of snow tomorrow, we were getting outside!  We bundled up and headed to the park where there was supposed to be an Easter Egg hunt (like we did last year).  We started seeing tons of cars coming back towards us.  Someone stopped and told us there were signs saying the egg hunt had been moved to the Savoy Rec Center.  Even though the Rec Center is pretty close, it would have been lots of work to get back to the house and load up in the car.  So I just continued onto the park with the kids.  And William ran home to hide the Easter eggs I had already filled.Picture 501Picture 503Once we were able to drag Owen away from the park, we surprised him with eggs hidden all over the yard.  William did a great job spreading them out.  It took him a minute to figure out what to do and then he was so excited trying to find them all!IMG_0634IMG_0639IMG_0643IMG_0644IMG_0647IMG_0649 IMG_0650 IMG_0653 IMG_0654 IMG_0657 Then we went inside and checked out his loot.  The 2 cars he got (a couple from the Cars movie that he didn’t have yet) have not left his hand all day.  And they are still tucked into bed with him.IMG_0665We’re really looking forward to more Easter fun next weekend in Peoria!

Mentor Mom Dinner

Last night was our spring Mentor Mom’s Dinner hosted my the Mom2Mom Group I’m a part of at church.  It was such a great night out with the ladies.  I have to give my hubby a shout out for doing dinner, bath, and bedtime all by himself and surviving!

I found some adorable chevron paper in bright colors and then went from there with our decorations.Picture 488 The mason jars were wrapped with burlap, a coordinating ribbon, and filled with pretty spring daisies.Picture 489 Each gals spot had a baby food jar vase (wrapped with ribbon), a “pillow” envelope filled with Easter candy and a small piece of paper to write a question on.  I used my Silhouette cutter to make the candy envelopes.Picture 490And since I hate wasting any paper, I also cut out little flowers to use as “confetti.”Picture 492 Picture 493We had about 35 ladies in attendance.  We started with a fabulous dinner made by Darlene at church.  I seriously haven’t had anything of hers that I haven’t enjoyed!  The ladies had questions to chat about at their tables and I also asked each person to write one question on their card for the mentor moms and I collected them.

After dessert and coffee with whip cream, Veronica shared an amazing talk.  She shared the “Fourmost Lessons” she has learned as a mom.  She shared specific ways and fabulous stories about what God has taught her through EACH son...using their personalities , giftings, etc.  It was great!
Then, after a short bathroom break,  our 6 fabulous Mentor Moms came and sat up for the panel discussion.  I read through all the questions and tried to narrow it down as there were so many good ones.  I read a question and then had each mentor mom give an answer.  Here was a sample of some of the questions:
  1. How do you keep worry from overtaking your mothering?
  2. How do you balance the pressing(laundry, cooking, cleaning) with the important (reading, playing, and just being with your kids)?
  3. How do you get your mojo back after having a baby?
  4. What is a favorite tradition you have with your kids?
  5. What do you do when your spouse and you disagree on a parenting decision?
And more.  We barely got to 1/3 of the questions.  It was great to hear these older and wiser moms share with us.  They all have traveled this road before and have kids that love Jesus.  There were some heavy questions and then lots of laughter.  After they shared with us, they went back to tables and prayed for us “younger” moms.  All in all, a great evening of being encouraged as a mom!Picture 495Picture 497Picture 498Picture 500

tooting my own horn

Weight.  It’s such a touchy subject that I haven’t talked a ton about this on here.  But I hit a pretty big milestone this week, so I thought I should toot my own horn for a short post.  And while I try not to care about the actual #’s on the scale, I’m using them here to show how hard I’ve worked. :)

This is me in labor with Ellie.  I weighed about 185.  I felt great.  I loved how I looked pregnant with her for some reason.IMG_6579The first 10 always come off easily.  Just having  a baby seems to help. haha  The next 10 came off with nursing and paying a little attention to what I ate.  But then I was stuck.  And even at my pre-baby weight, I was in the “overweight” category according to BMI calculators.  I was still in my “fat pants” and was really struggling every morning in my closet searching for things to wear.  Enter in the invitation to be in my brother and sister-in-laws wedding.  It was just the final kick in the butt I needed.  Along with that, I’d really love to spend lots of time at the pool this summer because the kiddo’s ages will be perfect for it.  Gotta get a tan for that bridesmaid dress.   And I wanted to be a bit more comfortable in a swimsuit.

So I suckered 2 friends into texting each week pictures of our scales for accountability and signed onto my MyFitnessPal account, which had laid dormant for over a year. As of this week, I’m at 144.4  That’s about 40 pounds down from my highest.  And about 20 pounds that I had to really work for!  I am now in the “normal” BMI category and weigh what I did at my wedding.  Now nothing looks like it used to largely because I’m not working out a ton.  I’ve focused more on my food intake since that what my current schedule allows.  I try to fit in at least 2 working out videos a week and will walk more once it gets warmer.  But mostly, it’s just been keeping track of every single morsel of food that goes into my mouth and making better choices.

Not fun, but seeing the results has kept me motivated to keep going.   I’ve kept a close watch on my milk supply for Ellie, but thankfully it didn’t change at all.  I don’t have any “real” before and after pictures, but here is a picture from November:pool-1915And here’s a picture from the dressing room yesterday while trying on a jean size I haven’t worn since high school!photo-001 Thanks to A and L for the awesome support and encouragement along the way!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Despite the very long couple weeks of sickness, I was able to squeeze in making the kids some shirts to wear for St. Patrick's Day today. There was quite a bit of green at church today, so they fit right in! :) It was my first church service in 3 weeks and it was so nice to get out of those house!

first trip to the ER

Thursday night was a “first” that no mom wants.  A trip to the ER.  Ellie had been battling this awful awful flu for almost two weeks (Owens awfulness only lasted 5 days which was bad enough). She’d have a day where’d she seem ok and then the next she’d be right back to vomiting, low grade fever, and awful diapers.  After several trips and calls to the doctor, her behavior Thursday warranted a trip to the ER.  She would barely lift up her head and wasn’t eating much at all.  Our nurse was worried about dehydration.

It wasn’t the best ER experience to say the least.  The place was packed and we were not life or death, so we kind of got shafted the whole night.  We waited and waited and were on a bed in the hall for quite awhile.Picture 438-001Picture 442-001 We said the same story to 3 or 4 different people, and finally got a (shared) room.  They gave her a dose of Zofran, which is an anti-nausea medicine.  Funny thing is that is the same medicine I took while I was pregnant with her.   About 20 minutes later, we tried to give her a bottle of Pedialyte which she took 3 sips of and hated.  But then she nursed and held it down.  I finally got her to fall asleep and about an hour later, I finally was able to track someone down to talk to.  We met with a doctor who said he was just going to send us home.  He basically said she may look bad to me, but they’ve seen much worse.   Like I said, not the best experience.  Of course, on the way out she had a diaper blow out and I had just run out of wipes.  Oh joy.Picture 443-001We finally made it home.  The poor thing had 2 awful nights as her tummy tried to get used to having food and medicine in it.  But I think that finally, after 2 weeks, she is officially on the mend.  Thank you Jesus!Picture 444-001

the dreaded flu

The last 12 days may have been the longest in my mothering journey to date.  I have had friends whose kids have had the flu.  I always said I was so sorry to hear that.  But I had NO IDEA.  None.  My kiddos have been sick before but nothing like we’ve experienced this last week and half.  I would not have wished this time on my worst enemy.  And I now have utter sympathy, pity, and respect for anyone who has mothered kids through the flu.  Our days have been filled with taking temps, puke, the worst poops ever, laundry and more laundry, doctors visits, and everything in-between.  Nights that seem to never end and days where I’m counting seconds until my reinforcements come home.
It has made me ever so thankful for a few things:
  • that my kids are (in general) very healthy
  • that our weeks are usually filled with activities that get us out and about.  Being stuck at home and inside is about to drive everyone insane.
  • that I have great girlfriends who have checked in with me and are praying us through this
  • that I have a mom that I can call to tell all the gross stories too that no one else wants to hear
  • that I haven’t had to wear real clothes, a real bra, or do my hair in 12 days (trying to see the positive here)
  • this too shall end
