first trip to the ER

Thursday night was a “first” that no mom wants.  A trip to the ER.  Ellie had been battling this awful awful flu for almost two weeks (Owens awfulness only lasted 5 days which was bad enough). She’d have a day where’d she seem ok and then the next she’d be right back to vomiting, low grade fever, and awful diapers.  After several trips and calls to the doctor, her behavior Thursday warranted a trip to the ER.  She would barely lift up her head and wasn’t eating much at all.  Our nurse was worried about dehydration.

It wasn’t the best ER experience to say the least.  The place was packed and we were not life or death, so we kind of got shafted the whole night.  We waited and waited and were on a bed in the hall for quite awhile.Picture 438-001Picture 442-001 We said the same story to 3 or 4 different people, and finally got a (shared) room.  They gave her a dose of Zofran, which is an anti-nausea medicine.  Funny thing is that is the same medicine I took while I was pregnant with her.   About 20 minutes later, we tried to give her a bottle of Pedialyte which she took 3 sips of and hated.  But then she nursed and held it down.  I finally got her to fall asleep and about an hour later, I finally was able to track someone down to talk to.  We met with a doctor who said he was just going to send us home.  He basically said she may look bad to me, but they’ve seen much worse.   Like I said, not the best experience.  Of course, on the way out she had a diaper blow out and I had just run out of wipes.  Oh joy.Picture 443-001We finally made it home.  The poor thing had 2 awful nights as her tummy tried to get used to having food and medicine in it.  But I think that finally, after 2 weeks, she is officially on the mend.  Thank you Jesus!Picture 444-001

the dreaded flu

The last 12 days may have been the longest in my mothering journey to date.  I have had friends whose kids have had the flu.  I always said I was so sorry to hear that.  But I had NO IDEA.  None.  My kiddos have been sick before but nothing like we’ve experienced this last week and half.  I would not have wished this time on my worst enemy.  And I now have utter sympathy, pity, and respect for anyone who has mothered kids through the flu.  Our days have been filled with taking temps, puke, the worst poops ever, laundry and more laundry, doctors visits, and everything in-between.  Nights that seem to never end and days where I’m counting seconds until my reinforcements come home.
It has made me ever so thankful for a few things:
  • that my kids are (in general) very healthy
  • that our weeks are usually filled with activities that get us out and about.  Being stuck at home and inside is about to drive everyone insane.
  • that I have great girlfriends who have checked in with me and are praying us through this
  • that I have a mom that I can call to tell all the gross stories too that no one else wants to hear
  • that I haven’t had to wear real clothes, a real bra, or do my hair in 12 days (trying to see the positive here)
  • this too shall end

emerging back into the world

So I didn’t think that God would start making me learn about my word for the year so quickly.  But this week I got quite a few lessons in this:
Last Saturday, Owen was really under the weather with a cough, runny nose, feeling lethargic, etc.  William is taking immune suppressants so of course, he got it next and bad.  He stayed home from work Monday and part of Tuesday.  On Tuesday, Wed, and Thursday I got hit with the headache, cough, sore throat,  you get the drill.  And then on Friday, Ellie got it.   There’s nothing worse than a little baby with a runny nose and cough.  The doc said it was just a virus with nothing that could be done (which is what I was hoping).Picture 472This sickness made me so very thankful that we are, in general, very healthy.  We’ve never really had a bug like this make it’s way through our entire house.  I literally cancelled something every day this week, from going to Mom2Mom to babysitting kids.  Feeling so awful is a very good way to quickly figure out the bare minimum of what needs to be done to just keep everyone alive.   We just hunkered down with our Kleenex and Tylenol and took cool baths, watched TV, and played.Picture 484Picture 433Along with simplicity at home this week, I literally had 3 specific opportunities to add things to my plate.  They were all things that sounded fun and one was even ministry related.  But I’m getting better at hearing that word, NO.  So I said no and will just trust that God will put more cool things in my path later when I’m not simplifying.

Owen’s week

It’s been a CRAZY week, so thought I better document it. :)  Monday morning we were scrambling around trying to get our house ready for friends we hadn’t seen forever.  We played on our new car mat from IKEA, ran a few errands, and then stopped and played for a bit at the indoor playground.  Owen enjoyed his sandwich shaped like a truck.Picture 218-001Picture 199Picture 197-002Monday late afternoon, our visitors arrived from Tennessee!!  Becky and her 3 kiddos made the daunting drive by themselves to see us (along with a few other friends).  It was so great to see them as we hadn’t even met Emerson yet.  Ellie was born on Emerson’s first birthday, so they’re birthday buds.  Aww, how cute!  Her poor little guy, Liam had started to get sick on their trip so we all just crossed our fingers that the sickness wouldn’t travel to anyone else.  Caed impressed William with a new architecture-like game on his iPad.  Picture 221-002 Becky decided to cut out early Tuesday morning because Liam still wasn’t feeling great at all.  So we headed to the library for our weekly Tuesday Two’s story time.  On the way, we ran into BoRics to get Owen’s hair cut.  The poor gal butchered his hair.  Not sure you can tell in this picture, but it’s uneven everywhere.  I mean, I know he was squirmy. . .but it’s bad. Oh well, at least it grows fast.Picture 224-001 When Owen was feeling well on Wednesday, we thought we were in the clear!  We played outside and got all hot and sweaty and enjoyed some popsicles.Picture 197-001Ellie enjoyed the toy show.  She loves watching her big brother.Picture 220-001 Thursday morning, Owen was a happy little guy.  We went to our last Beth Moore bible study and he did great in childcare.Picture 226 Picture 229 But then it hit.  Like the plague.  After dinner, I was getting Ellie to sleep for her pre-bedtime nap and I heard William yell “if you’re free I could use some help.”  I came down and saw vomit everywhere.  On the couch, floor, and a trail to the bathroom.  Owen has NEVER been sick like this.  Wow does it break your heart to see them get sick.  He had no idea what was going on.  He just kept saying “I puke.”  Poor little guy.  We bathed him and cuddled him while watching a movie.  And I made the rookie mistake of giving him a cracker and some water.  And then it all came back up.  Another bath.

William finally got him to sleep.  2 hours later, we were stripping the bed and his clothes once again.  He ended up sleeping with me and had no more incidents the rest of the night (or since for that matter).  He seemed to be pretty much back to himself the next morning.Picture 243He's been his happy self ever since, just a little tired. But man I sure hope that he stays as healthy as he has been in the past.  Watching your little person throw up makes you feel pretty helpless.  And yes, it makes me so thankful that this is as bad as it’s been for us.  I know many mommies deal with much more serious things with their kids!
