Friday, May 23rd was a good day! When the doctors did morning rounds, I asked begged that we be allowed to go home. Dr. Stratton agreed! The last thing on this little guy’s list was his circumcision. Save the worst pain for last, right?Around 11, a very nice doctor came and explained the procedure and I signed consent papers. The nurse gave me a meal ticket . I ran downstairs to the cafeteria and grabbed a quick bite and got back upstairs just as Miles was getting back. Now all we had to do was wait until he peed. Wouldn’t you know…my child would take 4 HOURS to simply pee. We nursed and nursed and checked his diaper again and again, nothing. The second he peed, the nurse swung into action and we were ready to leave in about 5 minutes!
Since William had the kids, it was easier for me to just drive him home myself. They don’t let you carry the car seat out, so he got his first wagon ride down while I went and pulled up the van.We got loaded up and I thanked God as we drove away from our home away from home. When I got home, Anne D was just leaving after dropping off a delicious meal and diapers! Owen and Ellie attacked the car seat the second we walked in the door. Owen wasn’t too interested in holding him.Daddy sure was though! He finally got a little wash down and I tried my best to get all the little tape off him left from all his wires.William had a hard time letting him go as he had barely seen the little man all week.We are so thankful for the amazing care he received in the NICU. But we are even more thankful to be home!
This was one of those projects I was going to blog about when it was done. But now that I'm a little ways in, I’m realizing this is going to take quite a bit of time, as in, it may never get totally done. So why not post about the process now?
In the quest for organizing more in each of my rooms this year, I wanted to get my recipes under control. This is what they look like currently. I have a fabulous recipe binder that my dear friend Sara made for me for my wedding. It has all her favorite recipes and has been so helpful. I was just shoving more of my recipes in the back but it was getting really full. So then, the recipes just got thrown in a manila folder which had spaghetti sauce and cookie dough all over it. Finding recipes that I needed: impossible.Enter: my mom. This is how she organizes all her recipes. I saw it last year and wanted it. So she was super kind and bought me everything I need. Tons of large index cards, 2 plastic tubs, and some labels. My goal is to get every recipe onto one of these 4x6 cards. Either cut from a magazine, printed from the internet, or handwritten:Then I just file them under their correct labels like appetizers, chicken, cookies, fish, etc. It makes the recipes very easy to find. And I can pull all the recipes I'm using that week for dinners and make my grocery list!My mom has 2 or 3 of these tubs all done. She writes right on the card any changes she did and how they liked it, etc. Or just tosses the card if it gets a thumbs down. Someday, all my recipes will be easy to find. I’m trying to get a few done each week. Slow going, but I already love the new system. How do you organize all your yummy recipes?**ETA – Used a acid-free glue stick to put my recipes onto the index cards. And Lindsey asked which categories I used so here’s my list. I started with all the “basics” and then added as I came to a recipe that I didn’t know how to file. So these may be different for you:
Last Saturday, Owen was really under the weather with a cough, runny nose, feeling lethargic, etc. William is taking immune suppressants so of course, he got it next and bad. He stayed home from work Monday and part of Tuesday. On Tuesday, Wed, and Thursday I got hit with the headache, cough, sore throat, you get the drill. And then on Friday, Ellie got it. There’s nothing worse than a little baby with a runny nose and cough. The doc said it was just a virus with nothing that could be done (which is what I was hoping). This sickness made me so very thankful that we are, in general, very healthy. We’ve never really had a bug like this make it’s way through our entire house. I literally cancelled something every day this week, from going to Mom2Mom to babysitting kids. Feeling so awful is a very good way to quickly figure out the bare minimum of what needs to be done to just keep everyone alive. We just hunkered down with our Kleenex and Tylenol and took cool baths, watched TV, and played.Along with simplicity at home this week, I literally had 3 specific opportunities to add things to my plate. They were all things that sounded fun and one was even ministry related. But I’m getting better at hearing that word, NO. So I said no and will just trust that God will put more cool things in my path later when I’m not simplifying.
I bet you guys are over Christmas, right? Well, sorry I've got 2 more posts for you. haha. This was the first year our family didn't get to celebrate together ON Christmas. So our immediate family had a nice, quiet little Christmas together. It was so fun now that Owen really "gets" it. He was singing happy birthday to Jesus all day and was so excited to open his presents! The night before we put out some of his bigger gifts and his tricycle.
Ellie got up (very) early so we hung out with the cat for a bit.
When Owen woke up he made his way right to his tricycle. He has seen it in the basement a few months ago (thanks Craigslist), but luckily, I think he forgot about it. Even with the seat lowered, his feet don’t quite reach the pedals, but he still loved it! Ellie “opened” her first little present which was super soft monkey we have named Mimi. Maybe this will be her “lovey” toy?
Of course, the first present he picked was the largest!
Inside was a ton of instruments, just like the ones he loves to play at his music class. I ordered them from Musician's Friend and they were very reasonable in price and great quality.
Even Ellie loved the jingle bells and egg shakers!
Next up was some duplo sets from MeMaw and PaPaw which he LOVED!
The morning went by with lots more great presents and then a yummy cinnamon roll breakfast.
Please excuse the awful house mess in this video of Owen trying out his new tricycle.
We just relaxed until late afternoon and then headed to my Aunt Toni and Uncle Tim’s house for a Christmas meal with the Hoerr family. This used to be a 50+ people gathering so it still feels strange that we all fit easily in 1 or 2 rooms. :) Ellie brought her new pink car to play with. I’m in love with this car!
Owen has taken a strong liking to my grandpa which is the sweetest thing ever. His middle name, James, is after my Grandpa.
The fun announcement of the evening was my uncle Nate proposed to his girlfriend, Suzanne with this beautiful little number tucked into the pocket of her North Face jacket. We’re excited to add 2 step-cousins into the mix this summer.
Our kiddos were the youngest ones there, so we tried our best to entertain them while watching out for Ellie tearing apart the house.
Here’s my sweet little girl, sans her headgear for the day. :)
She loves to give big, soppy kisses!
And that was our Christmas! Although it didn’t feel complete until the next weekend, which I’ll tell you about next. :)
I love early morning jammie time. It's usually spent cuddling, reading some books, watching some toons, and maybe even having a bowl of dry cereal before "real" breakfast time. I hope they continue to love each other (and books!)
Ellie is doing an awesome job sitting up on her own and yes, that's her first Barbie in her hand courtesy of Summer and girls. She loves diving into "her" toy basket.
Yesterday, we got to watch 2 adorable friends, Avery and Ryder. Not gonna lie. . .having a 3, 2, 1, and 5 month old is not something I'd wish on anybody. :) God bless you moms of multiples. There were moments of sweetness. And then there were moments of lots of crying and poop. But Friday will go better I'm sure of it!
this was before he decided he didn't want to be here
I am a 30 something stay at home mommy who lives in a great city in the middle of lots of cornfields.
I have 3 amazing kiddos, Owen (4), Ellison (2), and Miles (brand new). I love Jesus, my amazing hubby William, and our dumb orange tabby cat. I couldn't live without Diet Coke, snail mail, sushi, the color pink, my hot glue gun.
