Owen’s music class
We have been doing classes a the Champaign School of Music for awhile off and on. Their Music Together classes are fun for little ones. We’ve decided to let the kids do ONE activity per season for right now. I don’t think there’s reason for them to do more than that, especially as I know it’s going to just get more crazy as they get older. For this spring/summer, we threw out all kinds of sports option to Owen – tball, soccer, swimming lessons, martial arts, etc. Nothing. Refused every one. So I started looking into other things for him and we found the Music Explorers class at CSM. It’s a 45 minute class where they learn the very basics beginning skills on piano (keyboards) and ukulele. He got to pick out a ukulele (red was his choice) and got all his books on the first night of class. He was in love.
They spend the first 5-10 minutes singing a welcome song and things like that. Then they practice the ukulele with Mr. Luke. This includes things like learning the string names, how to hold the ukulele, how to pluck the right string, etc.
Then, they get to do piano with Ms. Danielle. Basic key recognition, learning soft and quiet, very simple songs, etc.
I will say that I’m not sure the instructors have had a ton of experience teaching small children and there’s been at least one child with some behavior issues in both of his sessions. And the price is a little steep. Buuuuttt the child loves it and refuses to try anything else. So we’re going to keep going for awhile. Now if I could just get him to practice. ;)

B&N Frozen Event
Today we decided to have an outing after naps (rare for us) and we headed to Barnes and Noble for their Frozen event. It was billed as super fun thing for kids and I thought there would be a few more characters present. It wasn’t a glamorous event by any means, but the kids did awesome and it’s always fun to get out and about.
At the first table, they poured what looked like salt into a cup. Owen got to dump in water and it turned into “snow.” They go to play with it in pans and bury animals and such. Then, we build snowman (Olafs) with glitter playdoh.
We cut out some snowflakes and hung them up on the little stage area. Of course, we had to belt out some Frozen tunes while on the stage!
They were so awesome that when Owen asked for a treat while we were leaving, I had to oblige. :)
It was a fun way to ruin our dinner. :)

Curtis Orchard
This week has been unseasonably cool and so one morning we decided to head over to Curtis Orchard for our first trip of the season! This place is about 5 minutes from our house and just about perfect for an outing. Free play spaces, kitties to hold, goats to feed, and yummy donuts to share. There was only 1 or 2 other families there when we went, so we basically had free run of the place. I also had some tokens left from last season, so the kids got to play in the mini-golf/park area. Owen was also very excited that they had fixed the train that moves around the dining area. (for a quarter :)
Looking forward to many more trips as fall nears!

First Outing with 3!
We decided to keep with the tradition of seeing some animals just a day or two after we get home with a baby. Saturday was opening day of one of local favorites, Prairie Farms. Who can say no to free adorable farm animals? It took a little longer and a few more trips back inside for forgotten items, but we made it out the door with 3!
We ran into Jeff, Holly, Keira, Caden, and their new sister Zoey! It was fun to quickly catch up on birth stories. Ellie and Owen were quite independent as we walked around the farm.
These 3 kiddos are mine. Whoa.
There was a snow cone truck parked close to the entrance and I’m a sucker for nostalgic thing like ice cream trucks, even when cups of ice are $3 a piece. Ellie was SO excited to get her cup.
We had fun just sitting and letting these two be goofy! All in all, a great first family outing!

Lil Picasso
Every Monday in the month of April, we went to a class at the Savoy Rec Center called Lil’ Picasso. We were just one of 3 families that signed up for it so it was a perfect size. The teacher had 4-6 art projects lined up and ready to go for our 45 minute session.
While they were projects I totally could have done at home, it was so nice to have a bunch ready to go. And the mess stayed there while we just went home! Totally worth the small cost for the class. It was a fun thing to do just the 3 of us before baby comes!

MTD field trip
Our friend Jill set up an awesome field trip to the MTD (our local city bus) garage. Owen is still talking about it, so it was definitely a hit!
Our tour guide showed us around to where they store all the parts needed to fix the buses. I’ve never seen a wall filled with so many nuts and bolts!
Yes, I was a little nervous as these two looked over the (very open) area watching three buses being fixed.
He did a good job showing the kids the size of things in our cars versus the size of them on the bus.
Owen’s favorite part (aside from the little red piggy bank with the MTD logo he got. yes, a strange thing to put a bus logo on) was getting to have a short ride on the bus. They took us to where they fill up with gas and then we got to go through the bus car wash. Ellie was quite nervous but survived! Overall, a really fun morning!

Savoy Orchard Days
This afternoon, we headed just down the street to Savoy Orchard Days. It’s a small little festival that’s held at a park just blocks from our house. Owen hadn’t been big enough in the past to even try it out, but I thought this year might be the year he’d enjoy some rides. We talked it up and he couldn’t wait to ride! Well that was until he actually got on.
Not a second after I took this picture, he started to scream that he wanted off. Luckily the kind lady at the front gave us our tickets back and Owen was spared from going around in a slow circle.
Ellie, on the other hand, could not wait to get on a small ride. The ride “engineer” would only let her if she was strapped in with another kid. Ok, whatever. She loved it and went on it twice!
After we gave away the rest of our ride tickets, we decided to visit a booth of a friend from church. Joy does amazing face painting! Her business is called the Joy of Facepainting. I’m not just talking about a rainbow or smiley face, but works on art on people’s faces. Check out her blog here.
We knew she’d have to be fast with Ellie, so she did some quick little ladybugs. Ellie just kept touching and looking at her arm.
Owen had just won a car playing a game. Joy simply looked at the car and recreated it on his arm (he didn’t want it on his face).
Owen loved it. We went to BW3’s afterwards to visit a friend who was serving that night. He kept his hand on the table to keep looking at it and refused to wash it off during bath.
Even though the rides were a bust, it was a fun family afternoon!
